The Campaign of Couth

I'm not entirely sure why elected officials have come to address us as "friend" or "folks."

Such "folksy" talk removes a level of formality and humility that I believe is of the utmost importance when considering the relationship between those elected and those who get them elected.  I will not disrespect the electorate by assuming I have license to address it as an entity less than one that is conducting a massive job interview.
